The Philosophic Radicals are best known for their support of democratic reforms. They called for universal male suffrage (Bentham was even sympathetic to female suffrage, although this issue never became a plank of Philosophic Radicalism), annual elections, and the secret ballot. The idea behind this democratic theory was essentially a simple one. Discover Book Depository's huge selection of Arthur James Balfour books online.       Some of the most interesting points of this small but powerful book, In Defense of Philosophy by Josef Pieper (Trans. Lothar Krauth. Ignatius Press: San Francisco, ) include a defense of the wisdom of a variety of classical and medieval philosophers as their ideas apply to the modern person. Naturally, as the title alludes, Pieper. This book is so vintage, it fell apart while I was reading it! Loved the language - there are some great quotes in here both by the author and the subject, Clarence Darrow. A fascinating, wishful dinner party would include sitting down at a table with Ayn Rand, Clarence Darrow, and maybe an elderly Fidel Castro, just for kicks/5(42).

Perhaps "Theta" is not aware that Earl Balfour is one of those who question all revealed religion, and that, in , he published "A Defence of Philosophic Doubt," and in "The Foundations of Belief" and, probably, his attitude towards the Christian Faith, had much to do in influencing him to refuse the application for disturbing the Mound.   There is no doubt that under the furious attack of Buddhism, Jaimini’s counter-revolutionary dogmas were tottering and would have collapsed had they not received the support which the Bhagvat Gita gave them. The philosophic defence of the doctrines given by the Bhagwat Gita is by no means impregnable.

Balfour's recent Defence of Philosophic Doubt (AMacmillan, ) is a book for which his antagonists may well feel grateful. I mean nothing equivocal.
